Celebrate National Trails Day with Appalachian Trail Workday in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Would you like to improve the hiking conditions on the Appalachian Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

Make some “trail magic” on Saturday, June 7, by joining us for this all-volunteer workday.

Breakdown of the day’s schedule

– Arrive at 7:30 a.m. at the Sugarlands Visitors Center Bus Parking Lot and enjoy some fresh-brewed Blue Smoke Coffee courtesy of Kevin Price and orange juice + donuts compliments of Food City

– Event hosts Friends of the Smokies, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club’s A.T. Maintainers Committee will distribute event T-shirts to participants. This year’s T-shirts are sponsored by Xerox- thank you!

– Everyone will meet their team leaders, divide into their assigned teams, and carpool to their work areas

– Team leaders will ensure that crew members have tools to do the scope of work to accomplish their projects for the day

– After arrival at their assigned work area, each team leader will explain the techniques to successfully perform maintenance tasks such as clearing waterbars, building steps and turnpikes, and trimming brush

– Teams will break for lunch. All volunteers should bring their own food and snacks to enjoy throughout the day, as well as sufficient water

– The end of day picnic will be at Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area, and will be catered by Buddy’s BBQ, and sponsored by Xerox

Work date & time – June 7, 2014 RAIN OR SHINE

Work areas – The Appalachian Trail between Icewater Springs Shelter and Silers Bald

What to wear – Layered clothing, boots or sturdy shoes (NO SANDALS)

What to bring – Plenty of water, RAIN GEAR, lunch, snacks, work gloves, sunscreen + bug repellent
