Mt. Cammerer was the goal for the FOTS Classic Hike of the Smokies on Sept. 13, with the Mt. Cammerer Fire Tower providing a majestic 360-degree view of the Smokies.
Twenty hikers made 11.4-mile roundtrip hike, led by master hiker Danny Bernstein.
The restoration of the Mt. Cammerer Fire Tower in 1995 was the first project of the Friends of the Smokies. FOTS was created in 1993, with 156 charter members each donating $1,000 to establish the organization.
The Classic Hike series for 2016 includes a bonus September hike to enable hikers who complete all the Classic Hikes to reach the Hike 100 Challenge. Those who have hiked the 2016 Classic Hikes to date have logged in 63.4 miles.
The additional hike will be the 13.4-mile Deep Creek Loop on Sept. 27. You must register in advance to participate in the Classic Hikes as space is limited.
