Now Hiring: Non-Profit Special Events Intern, Asheville North Carolina

Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park assists the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park by raising funds and public awareness and providing volunteers for needed projects. Since 1993, Friends of the Smokies has raised more than $68 million for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

One of the major sources of outreach for Friends of the Smokies is special events. Throughout the calendar year, our organization implements a variety of events in Tennessee and North Carolina.

Intern Position: Friends of the Smokies seeks a dynamic, self-starter to assist with event planning efforts during an eight- week summer internship. This is an opportunity for an individual interested in learning more about non-profit fundraising and event planning. The internship offers hands-on experience and the opportunity to gain new skills working with Raiser’s Edge donor database and One Cause, a mobile bidding platform. The Special Projects Intern will work directly with the North Carolina Director and North Carolina Event Manager to develop and implement the North Carolina office’s largest annual fundraising event, the Smokies Stomp Barn Party on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

Responsibilities:

  • Solicit and secure silent auction items from new and past donors
  • Maintain auction item database
  • Update guest registration, seating information and related data entry
  • Donor acknowledgement and guest follow-up
  • Create content for Social Media and/or E-Newsletter
  • Assist with other organization events including Classic Hikes of the Smokies Series and other outreach events (including some evenings and weekends, with adequate notice )

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Previous internship or related experience in fundraising or event planning is a plus
  • Must be computer literate, including Internet research experience, and proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Professional demeanor and phone etiquette
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with press and community contacts
  • Self-motivated, good organizational and interpersonal skills, detail-oriented, ability to multitask and prioritize while under deadline pressure
  • Enthusiasm for Friends of the Smokies’ mission

Time Commitment: Eight-week internship, May 25, 2020- July 24, 2020, and must be available to work and attend the Smokies Stomp Barn Party on Saturday, July 18, 2020, from approximately 11:00 am until 11:00 pm.

Hours: 20 hours/week, based on schedule; preferably three days a week in the office Work Location: Friends of the Smokies office in Asheville, NC and offsite as needed Compensation: This is a paid internship opportunity.
