Partnering to Preserve Great Smoky Mountains National Park
From historic preservation and facility improvements to trail rehabilitation, visitor amenities, and specialized planning and design services, Friends of the Smokies periodically solicits proposals from qualified professionals and contractors to complete projects that support the National Park Service’s mission.

Working in a National Park
Projects funded by Friends of the Smokies are performed within Great Smoky Mountains National Park and are undertaken in close coordination with the National Park Service.
Because these projects occur on federally managed lands, successful firms should be prepared to work within the unique environmental, cultural, and operational requirements of a national park. Depending on the project, work may involve:
- Historic preservation and rehabilitation of nationally significant structures
- Construction within environmentally sensitive landscapes
- Protection of natural and cultural resources
- Compliance with federal laws, regulations, and National Park Service policies
- Coordination with National Park Service staff throughout project execution
Many projects require specialized craftsmanship, thoughtful planning, and an appreciation for preserving the character and integrity of the Smokies for future generations.
Who Should Apply
We welcome proposals from qualified firms with experience in disciplines such as:
- Architecture
- Landscape Architecture
- Engineering
- Historic Preservation
- Construction
- Environmental Planning
- Specialty Trades
- Exhibit Design
- Interpretation and Visitor Experience
- Other professional services supporting park infrastructure and resource stewardship
Firms with experience working on public lands, historic properties, parks, or environmentally sensitive sites for federal, state, and/or municipal governments are especially encouraged to respond.
Procurement Principles
Friends of the Smokies is committed to conducting fair, competitive, and transparent procurement processes. Proposal evaluations are based on the qualifications, experience, approach, and criteria identified within each solicitation.
Selection through a solicitation does not constitute a guarantee of future work. Friends of the Smokies reserves the right to reject any or all proposals, waive informalities, request additional information, negotiate with qualified firms, or cancel a solicitation when determined to be in the best interest of the organization or the National Park Service.
